ECMAR news from May 2007
Maritime Applied Research Cluster ECMAR will lead to Greener Europe
Member of European Parliament Mrs. Corien Wortmann today emphasized that a boost on research and innovation is needed to tackle the global challenges, such as the climate change. A significant reduction of CO2 only can be achieved through a better transfer of knowledge between the research community, industry and government. She welcomes the initiative of the 18 leading European Research Institutes in the Maritime Sector to establish the ECMAR association.
She emphasized the important role of ECMAR during the ECMAR Seminar & Workshop in the Amsterdam Hotel Schiphol A4 on May 31. The scope of ECMAR is focused on the development of a common strategy for European Research in the maritime industry, and to support the adoption of the relevant research priorities within the scope of the EU Framework Programmes for Research and Technology Development.
The establishment of ECMAR is also supported by Professor Niko Wijnolst of the Dutch Maritime Network, who further expressed his strong belief in the strength of Maritime Clusters, such as ECMAR. Furthermore, he is convinced that only through open innovation and an integrated European Research Policy the ambitious targets set by the commission can be achieved. This importance also is addressed by Mr. Pierre Besse, chairman of the support group of Technology Platform WATERBORNE, one of the consultation sources for the commission to select the most relevant subjects for Maritime Research the coming years.
In this respect two Green Papers of the Commission are discussed by the Director of ECMAR, Mr. Henk H. Valkhof. The first is related towards the future Maritime Policy for the EU aiming at a thriving maritime economy in an environmental sustainable manner. This should be supported by excellence in marine scientific research, technology and innovation. The second is focusing on the future of the European Research Area, aiming at an adequate flow of competent researchers, a world class research infrastructure, excellent institutions and knowledge sharing. This all supported by well coordinated research programmes and priorities.
